We had an amazing show at the Automotive Testing Expo last week. Thanks to all attendees and the interesting exchanges with the technical experts from the industry.

Important topics of the event were e-mobilty along with battery management testing and fuel cell technologies.
Nevertheless, the current mobility is dominated by combustion engines. In terms of total emission reduction, we discussed with many visitors about the performance of the oil mist separator used in the blow-by of the crankcase ventilation system and its important role as the key factor for optimization.

The presented Blow-By test system BBT 143, along with the AVL BLOW BY METER supports a very fast and effective validation of the oil removal within the blow-by gas.

Since 1999 is the quality management of Topas GmbH got a successful certification according to DIN EN ISO 9001. Within the context, the 13TH monitoring audit took place assessing the ability of the management system and verifying its conformity with the audit criteria. The result shows, that the company achieved the audit objectives and the certification remains as an integral part of the corporate philosophy.

For the first time, Topas GmbH supports students for their academic career as part of the Deutschlandstipendium. In this way, more than 200 students have been supported and thus the bond between science and industry has been strengthened. From now on we support a scholarship holder with a monthly grant supplemented by additional federal funds. We wish our fellowship a successful year and look forward to seeing you again.

More than 400 exhibitors from all over the world met again at Filtech this year. in 2018 Topas GmbH presented itself with a new booth design.

The Topas GmbH contributed with two presentations on “The new ISO 16890 – challenges for the test system operator to achieve reliable test results” and “Solution to the ISO 16890-4 – discharge of filter element”.

In the course of the three-day event, we were able to hold numerous interesting technical discussions and make promising new contacts and, above all, cultivate existing contacts.We are pleased to have once again met the interest of so many visitors with our products and solutions, because after the fair the exciting phase of the project realization begins.

“The new ISO 16890 – challenges for the test system operator to achieve reliable test results”

Since Nov-2016 the new harmonised standard ISO 16890 for performance evaluation of filters for general air ventilation has become effective. The new ISO 16890 will replace the European standard EN 779 and harmonise the standard EN 779 with the American standard ASHRAE 52.2. The main goal of this new ISO 16890 has been to have a stronger correlation between laboratory filter testing and filter performance in real application operation. To achieve a more realistic laboratory filter evaluation the new standard requests for several changes at the test system setup as well as for a different performance of the test procedure. The most important change is done by defining new filter classes based on a PM efficiency rating.

This paper will describe the test setup and the test procedure realised at a turn-key filter test system for doing a fully ISO 16890 compliant filter testing. An overview will show the most important differences of ISO 16890, EN 779 and ASHRAE 52.2 filter testing supported by exemplary comparative test results. There will be a special focus on the technical realisation of the normative testing requirements by the test system operator. Based on our long-term experience in air filter testing a list of critical test parameters will be pointed out which are not described in detail in the standard but have to be observed by the operator…

“Solution to the ISO 16890-4 – discharge of filter element”

One of the main challenges of the new harmonized standard ISO 16890 is the standardization of the discharge process of the filter element. So far the influence of the static charge of the filter elements was tested for F7 – F9 filters through discharging a filter media probe by dipping it into liquid isopropanol. In the future the complete filter has to be discharged by putting it into a cabinet and conditioning it with isopropanol vapor for 24 hours.

For this purpose a discharge cabinet, considering functionality as well as safety aspects, was developed. This paper will describe the functioning of the cabinet and relate it to the specifications according to ISO 16890-4. Generally the test system allows automated and reproducible discharging of complete filter elements with isopropanol vapor, using minimal resources. The use of isopropanol is limited to much less 1 l and its release controllable, as it is evaporated through a packed bed. High requirements in terms of safety and explosion protection are taken into account, by integrating an additional humidification and a purging function. With all the considered safety features, the setup of the test system in a standard room without any additional ventilation system or an extraction hood is possible. With this execution of a cabinet comparable tests and targeted studies of the key parameters as the conditioning time, humidity, filter material and recharging over time are possible.

As the effects of the discharging process are up to the current state still to some extend unknown, several conditioning processes with different filter elements were performed and the efficiency is measured before and after the process to exemplarily evaluate the change in the efficiency. Therewith the fundamental usefulness of the discharge requirement can be shown….

The aerosol generator ATM 228 according to VDI 3491-2 for clean room validation according to ISO 14644-3 is a further development of the atomizer aerosol generator ATM 226 and fulfills the high standards Requirements of the VDI guideline 3491-2 excellent. According to ISO 14644-3, this device can be used to check the filter integrity of HEPA and ULPA filters as well as for recovery time measurement. Very small amounts of aerosol are needed to test very small filter surfaces. The ATM 228 has therefore been optimized in view of this requirement. On 28. August, the “Innovationspreis des Freistaates Sachsen 2017” was awarded on the futureSAX Innovation Conference. The Minister of State, Martin Dulig, awarded not only innovative companies, but also ideas from founders and start-ups. For the first time, the transfer prize was also awarded. This prize was given to Dr. Frank Schladitz of the C3 – Carbon Concrete Composite e. V., which we support as partners. We are proud to be among the nominees with the conditioning cabinet TDC 584, the worlds only solution for the safe neutralization of filter elements, according to ISO 16890. As earyl as 1994, Topas gmbH was awarded with the Saxon State Prize for Innovcation for the aerosol generator of the SLG series. In 2007, the PMP 694 opticatl particle sensor was awarded a special regognition as part of the competition “Innovationspreis des Freistaates Sachsen 2007”.

At the end of 2016, the new test standard ISO 16890 has already entered into force and is valid. In the transition phase to May 2018, EN779 will be replaced by ISO 16890 in medium term. With the new standard for classification and validation of general air filters, Topas has met the new requirements for filter testing technology and accompanies the introduction and implementation of the new test standard for new and existing Topas test systems of highest quality. With the filter test stand for general air filters (ALF 114), Topas is therefore the world’s first ISO 16890 standard test stand.
In the current edition 1/2017 of F & S – Filtering and Separating, Topas reports on the title and page 4 what new features the ISO 16890 will bring for the product range of Topas.

We are very delighted to see C³- Carbon Concrete Composite  received the German Future Prize 2016 and the Topas GmbH congratulate them for this most impressive science award in Germany.

The harmonization of international testing standard ISO 16890-4 requires neutralization of tested filter element by Iso-propyl-alcohole (IPA) treatment. Therefore a suitable test cabinet for filter discharging is needed.

Due to these problems TOPAS decided to develop a new cabinet for the filter conditioning according
to ISO 16890-4.

The Filter Test Rig ALF 114 has been developed especially for air filter testing according to standards ISO 16890-FDIS, EN 779:2012 and ASHRAE 52.2-2008. At Topas it could be accessed to a long-standing expertise in the field of construction and installing of filter test systems – since 1995 we have been developing, manufacturing, and installing particle filtration test rigs conforming to standards and user-defined ones for filter media and complete filter elements for quality control and and scientific work.
